4 of the sides on this adorable cube-shaped baby toy are designed to look just like the sides of a barn. There are lots of fun details like barn doors that really open, windows, and lofts. The top of the box looks like the barn roof; on the bottom of the box is a scene that looks like a grassy meadow outside the barn.

Each side of the box has pockets where you or your little one can put the finger puppets as you play with them. For example, the meadow scene has 3 pockets; there’s a mud puddle that has a pocket where you can insert the little piggy puppet, or any of the other puppets; the two grassy knolls are both pockets too. The bottom of the box is the scene pictured on the front cover of the book, if you want to take a closer look at it.

The Best Things About This Book

These patterns are colorful, fun, creative and super cute! They’ll provide your baby with lots of imaginative playtime.

So far I’ve worked the cow finger puppet from this book, and I plan to make some of the other finger puppets shortly. I found the instructions in this book clear, straightforward and easy to follow.

My little niece LOVES her new cow finger puppet! She has played with it every day since I made it for her. Cow has been riding around on her (unrelated) wooden toy train; she removes the little wooden blocks and puts cow over one of the spokes to go for a ride — a perfect fit! And she wears cow on one finger and makes her dance to the rhythm as we sing “Old MacDonald had a farm” together. It’s amazing how a couple hours of crochet time and a little bit of yarn can bring such joy to a little one. I imagine our playtime will get even more fun once cow has a few new companions, like the horse finger puppet and the chickens from this book.

The paperback version of Busy Baby Boxes is small and portable. It will most likely fit comfortably in a project bag or purse if you’re interested in taking your crochet on the road.

These toys are totally gift worthy; they’ll make truly unique baby shower gifts.

These toys are also fun and engaging crochet projects to work on. It’s hard to say who’ll have more fun — you, when you crochet these cute projects, or the baby who’ll get to play with them when you’re finished making them. I’m sure you’ll also enjoy watching your little sweetheart play with these adorable toys. Watching my niece play with her little cow puppet has certainly brought me much joy, and I’m looking forward to more fun as I work my way through some of the other patterns in this booklet.

Other Observations About This Book

The patterns in this book include written text instructions, multiple color photographs and diagrams. In the back of the book, you’ll find some general instructions for crochet abbreviations and needlework techniques you’ll need to know. This section also includes some line-art illustrations. There are instructions for embroidery stitches like the satin stitch and lazy daisy stitch. You’ll need the embroidery for finishing the finger puppets’ faces and for some other details, like the stem on the sunflower and the suns’ rays in the meadow on the bottom of the barnyard activity block.

If you never learned how to crochet, or you’re rusty on your crochet techniques and you need to brush up on them, this book isn’t going to teach you all the basic stitches you’ll need to know.
