Find Free Crochet Potholder Patterns, Plus a Few Paid Patterns (That Are Worth the Money)
You probably won’t find crocheted potholders making anyone’s list of most glamorous craft projects. However, you might be surprised to learn that, if I had to make a list of favorite craft projects, potholders would be one of the project groupings at the top of my list.
Why, you might ask?
Lots of reasons:
- Potholders are a great outlet for using up experimental swatches and squares, assuming I used appropriate yarn (typically cotton or wool.)
- Potholders don’t need to fit anybody, so I don’t stress out about gauge when I’m making them.
- I find it really interesting to work on layering two different stitch patterns together, for example a lacy stitch pattern over a solid one, to create different potholder designs.
- Potholders offer an outlet for testing out zany color combinations.
- Potholders are low-commitment projects that can be finished up quickly, yet they are extremely useful to have around.
Want to join me in crocheting some potholders? If so, I invite you to browse through these patterns, and get started on any that happen to catch your eye.

Striped Crochet Christmas Potholders
It’s the colorway that makes these potholders festive and “Christmas-y.” I’ve also tried stitching them in other colors, which I encourage you to do as well.

Crochet Cupcake Potholders
For the chef who loves baking sweet confections: these cupcake potholders would be a delightful addition to the kitchen decor. These are also a nice design to make for anyone who appreciates cupcakes, even if they don’t necessarily get around to baking them.
For those of you who give handmade Christmas gifts, I think that pairs of these potholders would be worthwhile gifts to give to family, friends or colleagues — especially if you give each pair of potholders packaged together with some actual cupcakes, or perhaps some other kitchen items.
I’ve considered putting cupcakes in a lidded tin, then placing the potholders on top, and then tying the grouping together with attractive ribbon and a bow.
I’ve also considered putting these potholders in a gift basket, along with a few hand towels and dishcloths.
I think this is one of those projects that it’s also nice to make and keep for yourself. I give away most of what I crochet, but I did manage to keep a couple of pairs of these for us to use in our kitchen.

Easy Tunisian Crochet Potholders
If you’re the kind of person who likes potholders to be basic, in an attractive yet unremarkable sort of way, this is the pattern for you. These potholders don’t do much to draw attention to themselves; if you look at them closely, you’ll see that they’re pleasantly textured, but there are no color patterns or pictures or anything crazy like that.
These potholders are a fantastic introduction to the Tunisian crochet technique. If you’ve never tried Tunisian crochet before, this is a fantastic starter pattern.

Crochet Potholder Patterns From Excellent Pattern Books
The following are NOT free patterns; however, the pattern books that include these designs are worth the money, in my opinion.
Vintage Potholder Featuring Flower Loom Motifs + Crochet
Pattern Details:
- This pattern is included in Crochet Loom Blooms by Haafner Linssen, published by Interweave.
- Crochet Skill Level: Beginner
- Flower Looming Skill Level: Beginner
- Pattern Designer: Haafner Linssen; modified, crocheted and photographed by Amy Solovay. The only modification I made to the pattern: I chose a much larger yarn than the one suggested in the pattern, which resulted in a gigantic potholder that also doubles as a hot pad. HOWEVER!! This potholder is not really all that protective. You will burn your fingers if you use this on a really hot dish. If you make this project, I recommend modifying this pattern to add another layer in between the top and the bottom layer so that it will be more protective when you actually use it.
Sunny Daisy Crochet Potholders
Pattern Details:
- Crafting Skill Level: The crochet work is easy; the finishing requires knowledge of how to sew crochet motifs together using whip stitch and how to add a shell stitch edging.
- Pattern Designer: Sandra Eng designed the two octagon motif patterns that comprise this potholder. Amy Solovay transformed them into the potholder design you see pictured above.
- Where to Get This Pattern: The motif patterns are from Sandra Eng’s excellent motif pattern book called Crochet Kaleidoscope.
So there you have it: Our picks for fantastic Crochet potholder patterns for free and for sale. We hope you found some lovely potholder designs to make.
