Lacet Definition: What Is a Lacet?

A “lacet” is a crochet stitch pattern that is often incorporated into filet crochet designs. The abbreviation for lacet is “La,” as specified in several antique and vintage crochet publications that I own.

How to Crochet a Lacet:

Lacet Instructions From Richardson’s Crocheted Edgings and Insertions — Make a ch, skip 5 sts, *1 dc, 3 ch sts, skip 2 sts, 1 sc, 3 ch sts, skip 2 sts, from * forms 1 lacet.

The above instructions were originally published in 1916.

I compared these instructions against the directions given in a couple of more updated, contemporary crochet books, and found that they are similar, but have slight differences. So if you are working from a pattern, I suggest referring to the pattern for the definition of a lacet as it applies to that specific pattern. It is possible that you may find slight variations in lacet instructions if viewing different patterns.
