Can you think of any occasions on which you might want to set your table using heart motifs — particularly heart-shaped fabric crochet coasters like these?

I can. Lots of them!

For starters, these pretty heart coasters would be a sweet touch to have at the table on any romantic occasion, like a wedding anniversary, or Valentine’s Day.

I also like to put them on the table for Fourth of July celebrations. Whether we’re eating in the kitchen or out at the picnic table, either way I think they’re a fantastic addition to most Americana-themed table settings.

They’re also appropriate to use for birthdays, and even for everyday dining. After all, there’s nothing wrong with showing a little love for your family (or roommates and friends) every day; there’s really not much need to wait for special occasions.

These sturdy hearts are also good for more than just table settings. They’re practically indestructible — and if you use cotton fabrics for crocheting them, they’re also reasonably absorbent. This means you can scatter them anywhere you want people to use a coaster under their drinks. They’ll hopefully help your furniture to avoid some of the usual drips, leaks, spills, scrapes and other mishaps it would otherwise be subjected to.

These hearts are pretty thick, so you could also use them as trivets in the kitchen. They’re ideal to use for setting under small-ish serving bowls. For larger pots or dishes, they might or might not be big enough alone. In cases where they’re too small by themselves, you could try using two or more of them side by side — or crochet one using a supersized crochet hook to make a much larger heart.

These coasters are crocheted using fabric strips instead of yarn or crochet thread. If you’ve never crocheted with fabric strips before, you’ll probably want to check out our page of free instructions for how to make a rag ball. It’s pretty easy to do — and if you have old sheets or linens that you’re not going to use any more, this is a fantastic project for disposing of them in a creative and environmentally responsible, not to mention artistically satisfying, way.

Crochet Skill Level: Advanced / Experienced. In theory, this should be an easy crochet pattern. If you were to crochet it using yarn, it would definitely be easy. However, I found it challenging to crochet this design using fabric strips, so I recommend the fabric crochet version to experienced crochet enthusiasts.

Supplies Needed to Make Fabric Crochet Heart Coasters or Trivets:

Sewing Machine: You can do this project without a sewing machine, but it will take much longer without it. When I travel, I often process some of my fabric strips using hand sewing techniques, and it is slow to do it that way — recommended only for patient crafters.

Fabric and Matching Thread: This heart is crocheted using strips of fabric and a large crochet hook. I chose a predominantly red batik fabric for making my sample project, but there are many possibilities for different fabrics you could try using. In any case, I do recommend that you use cotton, especially if you are going to make a trivet or hot pad. Do not under any circumstances use a synthetic fabric (like acrylic or polyester) for projects that will come into contact with hot dishes; if they get too hot, they could melt or outgas toxic vapors. Cotton is a much safer choice, which is why I recommend it.

The fabric strips I used measure about 1 1/4 inches. When the strips are stitched together end to end, it turned out to be a bit less than 10 yards worth of fabric strips all together. I recommend preparing more than that in case your crochet tension is different than mine. You can always add more strips at the end, but it’s a pain in the neck to have to stop and do it once you are crocheting.

Fray Check or similar fabric glue — optional.

Crochet Hook: To make my sample heart, I used a size K / 10 1/2 — 6.50 mm crochet hook. In hindsight, this is way too small a hook for comfortable crocheting. I recommend using a larger hook when you make your heart. If you do, your piece is likely to turn out larger than mine did, which is fine if you are making a hot pad or trivet. If you’re making a coaster, it’ll be a big one — great for use with super-sized drinks, gigantic mugs or extra large tankards.

Size of Each Finished Heart Coaster: My sample heart coaster measures about 5 inches wide at its widest point, and about 5 3/4 inches long at its longest point.

Prepare your fabric strips before you begin crocheting.

How to Crochet the Heart Shape:

ch 7. sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: ch 1, work 11 sc sts in ring.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in next sc, then work 2 sc sts in ea of the next 10 sc. You should have a total of 21 sc sts. sl st to join the work to the beg of the round.

Rnd 3: ch 1.

sc in next sc.

In next sc, work 3 sts as follows: 2 dc and 1 tr.

In next sc, work 3 sts as follows: 2 tr and 1 dc.

Work 1 hdc in ea. of the next 3 sts.

Work 1 sc st in ea of the next 3 sts.

hdc in next st.

Work the lower point of the heart in the next st as follows: dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc.

Crochet the Other Half of the Heart:

hdc in next st.

Work 1 sc st in ea of the next 3 sts.

Work 1 hdc in ea. of the next 3 sts.

In next sc, work 3 sts as follows: 1 dc and 2 tr.

In next sc, work 3 sts as follows: 1 tr and 2 dc.

sc in next sc.

sl st to join the work in the next st.

Rnd 4: Work 1 sl st in ea st, all the way around.

Finishing the Heart Shape:

End off. Weave in your loose ends using a smaller crochet hook. Alternately, you can use a needle and thread to stitch them to the project in an inconspicuous spot, and then cut off any excess. You may wish to finish any raw edges with Fray Check or a similar fabric glue.
