Have you ever come across a long, double-ended crochet hook and wondered what, exactly, you can do with it? Perhaps you even have one or more of these intriguing tools in your craft supply stash. (If you don’t, there are multiple places you could get one of your own. I got one at Hobby Lobby — and they’re also available for sale online. My sister brought me back a few more of them when she went to Japan.)

Or perhaps you’ve heard of a crochet technique known as “Crochet on the Double”, and you’d like more information on how to do it — or you’d like to find some different crochet stitches you can make using that technique.

If you’re interested in double-ended crochet for any reason, there’s a lovely crochet stitch dictionary you should know about. It’s called 101 Crochet Double-Ended Hook Stitches.

The material presented in this book is not brand new, but Annie’s Crochet has recently released a brand new CD-rom bundle that includes this book plus others. That’s how I got a hold of the copy of the book I am reviewing. I’m really enthusiastic about this bundle; it’s a fantastic value for the asking price. If you want to get a copy of this particular title, my understanding of the situation is that you have 2 primary options. You could buy a used copy on the secondary market — because the book is out of print — or you could buy a cd-rom bundle that includes this title. At the time of this posting, I wasn’t able to find any digital PDF or Kindle editions available for this particular title.

If you happen to have a need for bunches of different crochet stitches covering lots of different crochet techniques, I think the CD-Rom bundle offers you an excellent value for its asking price.

The Focus of This Book:

This is both a crochet stitch dictionary and a technique book. You’ll have the chance to learn (or improve your skills in) the double-ended crochet technique – and you’ll also have the chance to discover 101 delightful stitches you can make using the technique.

Double-ended crochet is a variation of Tunisian crochet. Usually, Tunisian crochet hooks have a stopper at one end; but, with double-ended crochet, you have hooks on both ends, and you are likely to use both ends of the hook as you work. It’s a fascinating technique that offers you zillions of wonderful options and possibilities.

The Best Things About This Book

This book really shows off the versatility of the double-ended crochet technique. It includes ripple stitches, textures, bobbles, lacy openwork stitches and more.

The stitches presented in this book were designed by multiple designers. This is fantastic, because it gives you a broad variety of stitches and styles to try. Designers include Tammy Hildebrand, Darla Fanton, Dorris Brooks and others.

This book has some practical, helpful technical information on how to do double-ended crochet. If you aren’t yet familiar with the technique, it’s a great introduction to the topic.

In this book, you get to see pictures of both the front and the back of each crochet stitch. The two sides can look quite different, and in most cases, both sides are interesting.

This book gives you photos of both sides of each double-ended crochet stitch, empowering you to easily decide whether or not the stitch is one you could use without having to crochet a swatch for yourself.

The majority of the stitches in this book require 2 yarn colors. There are some stitch patterns that have even more colors.

Things to Be Aware of Before You Buy This Book

This book DOES NOT include international symbol crochet charts.

This book does not have patterns for finished projects you can make. However, you can use any of the stitches presented in the book to design your own projects.

Conclusion

If you’re interested in the double-ended crochet technique, you absolutely need this book. I don’t know of another comparable reference on the topic.

I don’t know of a better book than this one for learning about double-ended crochet. However, there’s another excellent reference available that could make an excellent companion to this book — and that is Crochet Master Class by Rita Weiss and the late Jean Leinhauser.

This is a book that covers multiple crochet techniques, allocating one chapter per technique. Darla Fanton contributed the chapter on Double-Ended crochet to Crochet Master Class, and it includes one gorgeous project: a super pretty baby blanket pattern.

This is a fantastic book for anyone who is interested in mastering crochet as an art form. I highly recommend it. You can learn more in my detailed book review of this title.
