Cross Stitch Scrap Crochet Afghan Pattern by Tammy Hildebrand

This pretty striped afghan is crocheted in one piece and finished with fringe. The pattern was apparently given that name because of two different types of crossed stitches that are incorporated into the design — the cross single crochet and the cross double crochet.

The Best Things About This Book

These patterns are colorful, bright, fun and interesting.

There’s lots of variety here; no two afghans are alike, so you aren’t likely to get bored working from this selection.

You get lots of different blanket constructions here — a nice mix of motif patterns, stripes, one-piece afghans and a strip afghan.

These patterns are all totally practical. The finished projects look as though they’ll be warm, comfortable and useful – no duds included!

This book is GREAT if you need to use up yarn scraps — but it’s still useful even if you’re brand new to crochet, and you don’t have any yarn scraps. You can plan out your color combinations if you prefer, rather than being limited to only using the colorways you have as yarn scraps.

Apparently, these patterns were carefully tested, as evidenced by the book’s credits. The book includes credits for a technical editor and 4 different pattern testers.

Other Observations About This Book of Scrappy Crochet Afghan Patterns

International symbol crochet charts ARE NOT included in any of these scrap afghan patterns.

I recommend this book to other crochet enthusiasts with caveats.

When I originally reviewed this book, it was an amazing value for its asking price. Since then, the book’s publisher, Leisure Arts was acquired by another company, and they raised the price on this book. In my opinion, other similar books are now a better value for the money you’ll spend on them.

Last I checked, on 12-21-2025, the patterns each worked out to costing about $1.75 based on the book’s asking price. That’s a reasonable price for what you get; I do think the patterns are worth that. However, some of the competing titles available are an even better value for the money you spend.

For example, I’d recommend taking a look at Crochet Kaleidoscope and Crochet Afghan Revival: Get 40 Spectacular Patterns for Crocheting Blankets as possible alternative purchases before you decide for sure if this is the book you really want.

That said, this is a book I think any crocheter would find useful, and I think you will get your money’s worth out of it, even at the higher price, if you are a frequent crocheter who has a lot of scrap yarn that needs to be used up. It’s also a good buy for beginners who are relatively new to crochet, as the patterns are all easy to achieve good results with.
