Here’s the basic crochet heart applique worked in Knitpicks “Swish” DK wool yarn. The official color name for this delightful shade of burgundy is Holly Berry. I used a size H / 8 – 5.0 mm crochet hook to crochet this example. Then I embellished it with ribbon and a colorful wooden button. The finished heart applique measures a bit less than 3″ wide by 3″ high.

You can use just about any sort of yarn, thread or fiber to crochet this little heart-shaped applique. I suggest using leftover yarn from other projects if you have any available. Additionally, you’ll need a crochet hook in a comfortable size for working with your chosen material. A tapestry needle is useful for weaving in ends, and for stitching your applique to another crochet or knitting project. You may also want to choose some other pretty accents like ribbons, buttons, beads or smaller appliques to embellish your heart.

If you don’t add any embellishments, a little round hole will be visible in the center area of the heart shape. There are ways to take advantage of the hole as a design feature; for example, you could sew a round, three-dimensional button onto a hat or other project, and then use the hole as a buttonhole for “buttoning” the heart onto the hat. You’d probably also want to stitch the heart to the hat (or project) to secure it better.

Pattern Details:

You crochet this design in three rounds, starting with a center ring and working your way outward. In the first two rounds, you start out by creating a circle shape, then in the third round you transform the circle into a heart.

Finished Heart Size:

Your hearts could be different sizes depending on the materials you use and other factors. If you want a small heart applique, use crochet thread or fine yarn. If you want a large heart shape, crochet with a bulky, chunky or jumbo yarn.
