Want to Make a Greeting Card With a Sunflower Design?
I made this artsy, circle-shaped greeting card for one of the International Scrapbooking Day challenges at a popular paper crafts website. The challenge was to make either a pop up card or a shaped card.
I chose to do a circle-shaped card. I use a compact die cutter, so I don’t have any large, card-sized shaped dies. So I used a lid from a yogurt container as a template to draw around in order to create my circle shape.
Of course, if you happen to have a full-sized die cutter and a large circle-shaped die, using them would be a lot easier and more elegant than my solution. But if you don’t, you can use any round, flat object that’s the right size, and trace around it to draw a circle shape on cardstock that you can cut out for your card base.
I thought this was gonna be a super simple, quick project — HAHAHAhahahahahaha!!
Haha! Ha!
No. This wasn’t quick, nor was it simple.
I started by making the card base using the yogurt lid as I described above. So far, so good.
Then I stamped a few Vicki Boutin stamps onto plain white cardstock and cut them out. These stamps are from the Sweet Rush collection, which Vicki designed for American Crafts. If you want to use the same exact stamps I did, you can grab this stamp set from either Amazon or A Cherry on Top Craft Shop.
I was going to tape the stamped cardstock onto the card base and be done with it — but I looked at it and thought to myself, “This image looks so flat. There is no depth to it at all. It looks really boring, and I am going to be embarrassed to send this to anyone I know.”
Now, if I’d been at all smart, I would have replied to myself as follows:
“Shut up! This project is finished. The end.”
But of course, that isn’t what I did.
I thought to myself, “Okay, I will grab some markers and a white gel pen and add in a few little details.”
Which I did.
But oh dear! With each pen stroke, I thought to myself, “It still needs more work.” And three hours later, I was still fussing with it.
So, if you want your sunflower card to look like the one pictured, you will have to doodle some extra details on top of your stamped flower and leaf images.
But I’m warning you now, if you’re in a hurry, you should probably just leave well enough alone, and skip the doodling.

Craft Supplies You’ll Need for Making a Sunflower Card Like This One
- Sunflower and leaf stamps: I used Vicki Boutin’s Sunshine stamps from the Sweet Rush collection.
- A set of gel pens: I recommend Pilot, because they are refillable, but you can use whichever pens you happen to have.
- Adhesive like Cherry Tape
- Watercolor Paints or Markers: For painting the flowers and leaves, you can use any watercolor-y media: paints, brush markers or even those watercolor pencils.
- Cardstock or Heavy White Paper: I used Neenah Solar White 110 lb. Classic Crest Cover Cardstock.
- Circle die or round shape
- Scalloped Scissors: These are for cutting a scalloped circle shape around the outer edge of your stamped and colored floral image.
