Crochet Pattern Sampler Afghan Squares Series

Free Crochet Patterns for a Series of Coordinating Afghan Squares

Want to crochet a fun sampler afghan? Here’s one possible way to approach it: Browse through these free crochet patterns for coordinating afghan squares. Pick out the ones you like, and then help yourself to the free crochet patterns and charts for crocheting each square. Don’t forget to grab an edging pattern you can use when you finish off your afghan.

These squares all coordinate well with each other and can be used together in the same crochet projects: blankets, throws, pillows, linens and many other types of crochet projects.

These squares all measure approximately 6 1/2 inches when crocheted using worsted weight yarn.

Slanting diagonal stripes are the most prominent design theme featured in this two-color square. You crochet this square using the tapestry crochet technique. If you want to add additional colors, you can do so using surface crochet on the fabric. I show an example of this on the pattern page.

I’ve used this square to crochet bunches of different projects including this Pattern Sampler Afghan and several potholders, including the Peppermint Candy potholder.

Three-Color Crochet Checkerboard Afghan Square

This classic checkerboard design was the first afghan square in the series. You crochet it using three different colors of yarn. I’ve used this pattern to crochet a broad variety of different crochet projects including the Pattern Sampler Afghan, a Christmas Tree Afghan and a Christmas Tree Pillow.

These crocheted afghan squares feature a mini-checkerboard design. Each square on the checkerboard consists of only three single crochet stitches, making this one the smallest checkerboard in the series so far. The squares are crocheted in two colors, and then you add surface crochet details using the third color. The surface crochet helps the checkerboard pattern to pop out from the background.

So far, I’ve crocheted a couple of different versions of this design. One is the tan, blue and green version I made for the Pattern Sampler Afghan. The other is a Valentine-friendly version that I combined with heart motifs for Valentine’s Day. I have pictures of both of these projects available on the pattern page for this square.

The focal point of this crocheted square is a simple evergreen tree. You’ll use multiple techniques for making this square including cross stitch on crochet, tapestry crochet and surface crochet. The design can look Christmas-y, or not, depending on the colors you use for crocheting it.

Made with love: The focal point of this afghan square is a heart design.

The “Pattern Sampler” series of squares has a few more designs in it, but they are temporarily unavailable online. They were originally published on another website that has since removed them. I am working on re-writing and re-formatting the patterns to be published on this website and hope to make them available again soon.
