You crochet this easy snowflake in the round, working outward from the center. You need only basic stitches for this project, but you’d never guess that to look at it — the results look delightfully fancy. This is a beginner-friendly crochet project that you can make quickly. It’s a versatile pattern. Use it to crochet snowflake appliques for embellishing Christmas stockings, hats, scarves, sweaters, and shawls; snowflake-themed Christmas tree ornaments; mantlepiece decorations; window decorations; gift bag adornments; etc.

Crochet Skill Level: advanced beginner / very easy. You’ll need to have learned how to crochet the following basic stitches:

Materials You’ll Need for Crocheting This Snowflake:

  • Yarn or Crochet Thread: You can crochet this snowflake with the yarn or crochet thread of your choice. Smooth, light-colored threads and yarns work best if you want to make your snowflake look like the project sample. I crocheted the sample snowflake using Cascade 220, a medium-weight wool yarn (#4 on the Craft Yarn Council’s standard yarn weight system) I highly recommend this yarn.
  • Crochet Hook: Size I, or any crochet hook that’s a suitable size for working with the thread or yarn you’ve chosen for crocheting your snowflake.
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Size of the Finished Snowflake:

My sample snowflake measures about 5″. The size of yours will vary based on several factors including the materials you choose and your individual way of crocheting.

Round 5: [skip all sl sts. Work 3 sc sts into the space formed underneath of the ch-3 in the previous round. ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, dc in next dc, ch 3, 3 sc in next ch-3 sp.] Repeat sequence in brackets 5 more times, for a total of 6 times. At end of round, sl st to join the work to the 1st sc st worked at the beg of the round.

Finishing the Snowflake

End off. Weave in loose ends. If you crocheted your snowflake using thread or yarn that responds well to blocking, i.e. cotton or wool, block the snowflake. If you used synthetic yarn such as acrylic, there is no need for blocking. My sample snowflake has not been blocked, but it should be.

Use the snowflake as you wish; it makes a fantastic embellishment or applique. Enjoy!
