Supplies You’ll Need to Make This Birthday Card

  • Clear Stamps: I used Pinkfresh Studio’ contribution to the “Happy Birthday” clear stamp set by the Stamping Village; This is a collaborative stamp set featuring contributions by Pinkfresh Studio and numerous other stamp manufacturers. The stamps are all birthday themed, and you can use them together, or not, as you like. To make this particular birthday card, I used the cute cake stand, birthday cake, flower and sentiment stamps by Pinkfresh Studio from this set.
  • Patterned Papers by Pinkfresh Studio: I used the “Hope” patterned paper from the “Just a Little Lovely Collection” and one of the patterned papers from the “Celebrate” collection, which was a collaboration between Pinkfresh Studio and Altenew.
  • Scalloped Oval Die or Oval Shaped Stencil + Decorative Scissors: If you have a die cutter, you can die cut a scalloped oval to use for this project. However, you do not need a die cutter to succeed with making this project. If you want to fussy cut your card elements, you can use an oval-shaped stencil plus decorative scissors for cutting out a scalloped oval shape. I used an older oval-shaped stencil plus scalloped scissors by EK Success.
  • Card Base: You can use a ready-made card base and envelope, or you can make your own card base using plain white cardstock, or the cardstock color of your choice. I made my own card base for this project, so I give you instructions on how to do that in the text below.
  • Heavy Cardstock: You’ll need a small bit of Tim Holtz Heavystock paper or a similar heavy cardstock for stamping your design on.
  • Ink Pads in the Colors of Your Choice: I used “Dusty Concord” (purple) and “Kitsch Flamingo” (pink).
  • Gray colored pencil
  • Turquoise Marker — I used a Tombow brush marker, color #403, which is sold separately and is also included in the Brights collection, to color in the scalloped bit of the oval frame. When I just checked, Dick Blick had the best price on these that I could find online for both the sets and the individual markers.

Step-By-Step Instructions for How to Make This Birthday Card

This card measures 7″ wide x 5″ tall.

  • Cut a card base measuring 10″ x 7″ and score it down the center using a bone folder, scoring board or the scoring tools of your choice.
  • Cut a piece of “Celebrate” patterned paper down to 5″x 7″ and attach to your card base using the adhesive of your choice. I used Cherry Tape for this purpose, but any paper-friendly adhesive or tape will work fine for this.
  • Cut a 4″ x 6″ piece of “Hope” patterned paper.
  • Optional: Ink around this piece of paper with a small ink pad; or, alternatively, draw around it with your turquoise marker.
  • Layer this paper on top of the card base using adhesive. Set the entire piece aside while you do the stamping. If you’re using a liquid glue, I recommend letting these layers dry before adding any more layers.
  • Stamp the cake stand onto Tim Holtz Heavystock paper using the ink of your choice. I used Tim Holtz Distress Oxide ink in the “Dusty Concord” color. Let each ink color dry before adding any more stamping, so as to avoid smearing your ink and having to start over. /li>
  • Stamp the cake image using the ink color of your choice. I used Kitch Flamingo Distress Oxide ink for this.
  • Stamp the tiny flower on top of the cake using “Dusty Concord” Distress Oxide ink or the ink color of your choice.
  • Stamp the sentiment using “Dusty Concord” Distress Oxide ink, or whatever color of ink best matches your design.
  • Draw an oval frame around the stamped design with colored pencil plus your oval stencil.
  • Using a gray colored pencil plus a ruler or straight edge, create the illusion of a table that the cake appears to be resting on. Color in your table using your gray pencil.
  • Cut around the oval shape using your scalloped scissors.
  • Color in the scalloped portion of your oval shape using the coloring medium of your choice. I used a Tombow Dual Brush pen.
  • Attach the stamped, scalloped oval frame to the card with adhesive.
  • Personalize the inside of the card as desired and send it to the recipient of your choice (or add it to your card stash to send at a later time).

So there you have it: That’s one possible idea for making a pretty, feminine birthday card featuring birthday cake and floral motifs plus gorgeously feminine colors. I hope you LOVE this idea — If you do, feel free to use it for creating birthday cards to give to recipients in your inner circle.

I was motivated to create this card because I came across the Pinkfresh Studio March challenge, which was to create a paper craft project that includes a frame. LOVED this challenge and am so happy I decided to play along with the challenge. My heartfelt thanks to the team at Pinkfresh Studio for hosting the challenge; I find challenges like this to be a great motivator for getting projects done and adding to my card stash so I will have birthday cards and other cards available for sending in the future when I need them.
