The concept: You choose one or more of the squares you want to use to make your blanket; there are bunches of possibilities, including squares that feature heart motifs, pine tree motifs, geometric motifs, checkerboards and more. You can customize the colorway, the layout and the size of your baby blanket; the instructions cover crib sized blankets, receiving blankets, twin size blankets and adult-sized blankets. So you could choose to crochet a blanket that will grow up with the baby, or not.

I crocheted my sample baby blanket in a boy-friendly colorway that incorporates turquoise, green and tan yarns; however, it is soooo easy to customize your own colorway with this pattern. I think it would be interesting to choose random colors to make an ultra-colorful baby blanket. Another option would be to substitute two contrasting shades of pink in place of the turquoise and the green I used in my project sample, to create a baby girl’s blanket. It’s really a simple matter to re-color the squares in this pattern, so I encourage you to experiment with using your own color choices.
