Lily Chin is an internationally-renowned knitwear designer, educator and author.
Lily is remarkable for being exceptional at all 3 of these skills: design, teaching and writing. It is rare to find all 3 of these skills so well-developed in a single human.
Lily’s work has greatly influenced my own creative work.
Back in the 1990s, I used to subscribe to Vogue Knitting magazine. During the time period when I was a subscriber, this magazine often included Lily’s knitting patterns. The VK editors once also included an interview with her, which I loved!
So when I found out that she would be teaching at the Knitting Guide of America’s convention in 1994, I decided I had to make the trip.
That was an experience I will never forget!
I took a bead knitting class with her at the convention. I still have the notes I took in that class.
During the class, Lily said, “If you can graph something, you can knit it!” These words of wisdom have echoed in my brain throughout the decades that followed. I often think of Lily as I sit with colored pencils and knitter’s graph paper (and nowadays, as I sit with my computer design program, Gimp, and chart out patterns to knit or crochet).
Lily is the author of many magazine articles, many books and many videos. She has also contributed patterns to many other publications. I haven’t posted reviews of very many of her books, but based on her skills, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy any of them. Her work is solid.
I reviewed the following books that include crochet patterns by Lily Chin:
The Best of Interweave Crochet:
Lily Chin contributed one crochet pattern to this book; it’s a pattern for a stunning lace crochet dress. The dress is a classic style that still looks fabulous all these years later.

Gooseberry Patch’s Farmhouse Crochet Book:
Lily Chin contributed a pattern to this charming collection of farmhouse-style crochet patterns.

So there you have it: That’s the story of how I met Lily Chin and the story of how she has influenced my crochet, knitting and creative work.
As I mentioned above, this is absolutely NOT a complete list of books that Lily Chin has contributed to. The titles mentioned above are ones I actually own, and I have read them. I don’t review books I haven’t read, which is why this list is so short (So many books! So little time! You know how that is…)
0ver to Y0u:
Did you ever take a workshop or class with Lily Chin? How did you like it?
Which of Lily’s articles, books, videos and classes are your favorites?
Let’s talk about it in the c0mments!
