Here’s a card making idea for those of you who like to make your own cards. This is a Mother’s Day card constructed from floral patterned papers and embellishments.
Card Dimensions: 7” x 5”
Does your mom love beautiful floral designs? And does she enjoy the bohemian aesthetic? If so, you’re invited to consider the possibility of making a card similar to the one pictured above. You aren’t going to be able to replicate this idea exactly, because it’s an older project, and the exact supplies I used have all been discontinued (I have included the names of the original product manufacturers in parentheses below in case you want to search your stash for the products, but it would be a miracle if you still have any of these items stashed). However, I think this card making idea is still quite beautiful and valuable, because there’s no shortage of similar floral papers and stickers available now; you can use different supplies but still end up with a beautiful Mother’s Day card to give to your mom.
And, that aside, this is a great idea to consider if you aren’t already set up with a die cutter and dies, because you can use ribbon and stickers for your embellishments rather than needing to invest in a new die set.
How to Make the Paper Lace Band:
There are multiple ways you could acquire a lacy-looking border design like this one. I made this project before home die cutters were popularized, and I used low-tech hand punches and decorative scissors to do this (detailed instructions below, in case they’d be helpful to you.) A more convenient alternative would be to use a lacy border die like Pinkfresh Studio’s Lacy Edgers. If you aren’t set up with a die cutter and dies, another option would be to substitute a border sticker. Echo Park’s sticker books frequently have fantastic border stickers; if you have any of their sticker books, you can look at the last page to see if they have good options that’ll work for your card. If you want to buy a new sticker book, check out the Life Is Beautiful sticker book for a really pretty selection of possibilities. The sticker book might seem a little pricey at first glance, but keep in mind that you get a massive number of stickers for the money, and so the purchase will beef up your stash and empower you to make bunches more gorgeous cards and paper craft projects.
If you want to make your lacy band the way I did it, here are the step-by-step instructions for that:
Cut a 5/8” band of pink cardstock using “Mini Scallop” Paper Edgers for upper edge and “Seagull” Paper Edgers for lower edge. Ink with various colors of dye ink (Rubber Stampede). Let dry. Ink overtop with Pearlescent Orchid Brilliance Ink (Tsukineko). Punch the lace design using the following hand punches (Fiskars): 5/16” tear drop, ¼” heart, and 1/16” circle.
How to Make the Card:
Cut your card base to size.
Score and fold it using a scoring tool for paper. Set it aside.
Cut a 7” x 5” piece of patterned paper (Creative Imaginations) and attach to front of card using any adhesive that’s good for paper crafts. Layer 2 smaller pieces of patterned paper (Basic Grey, Stampin’ Up) on top of card at angles. Cut a 1 ¼” band out of striped patterned paper (Creative Imaginations) using “Mini Scallop” Paper Edgers (Fiskars.) Stamp “Happy Mother’s Day” (Hero Arts) on the band using purple dye ink (Rubber Stampede.) Attach to front of card. Cut a 7” piece of patterned ribbon (Creative Imaginations) and attach to front of card. Stick a sticker (Creative Imaginations) on front of card. Stamp “Bella Flora” flower stamp (Inque Boutique) on patterned paper (Creative Imaginations) using hot pink ink. Cut around the stamped image using “Mini Scallop” Paper Edgers. Attach a floral brad (Autumn Leaves) in the center of the flower. Attach stamped flower to front of card. Attach paper lace band to front of card. Ink around the edges of the card with Olive Pastel Colorbox Fluid Chalk (Clearsnap.)
