This book includes both written-out patterns and charts. Most of the charts are large and easily readable — a major plus! The fonts used are all legible and appropriate.

There’s some truly lovely design work represented in this volume. There aren’t many knitting books that compel me to want to pick up a pair of knitting needles and knit by hand — but this one has me feeling super motivated to unearth my knitting needles and dust off my long-dormant lace and cable knitting skills. There are some outstanding shawl patterns in this book that look like they’d be worth the effort. I don’t say that lightly, as I’m lazy when it comes to hand knitting. Machine knitting is an option I’m well versed in.

Out of the 35 patterns, there are 5 that I’d be interested in knitting — 2 of which I really, really, really want to knit. And I’d want to wear almost all of these shawls if a magical knitting genie could somehow be convinced to do the knitting for me.

Fashion is a personal thing. Everybody’s tastes are different, but I can say this: These styles have mass appeal. I think most knitters will be able to find multiple projects to interest them in this book, assuming of course that shawls and wraps are of interest to begin with.

Things to Be Aware of Before You Buy This Book

If you’ve been a loyal Vogue Knitting magazine subscriber for years, this book likely won’t add anything new to your library; these shawl patterns were all featured in various back issues of the magazine before. But if you’re a casual reader of the magazine, and you’ve only picked up a few issues from the newsstand here and there, this is a good opportunity to see some of the shawls and wraps you’ve been missing out on.

You won’t find the suggested yarns for these patterns at your local Walmart or “Big Box” craft store; you’ll need to either mail order them or shop at a local yarn store if you’re blessed to have one nearby. Substituting yarns is also an excellent option if you are confident in your abilities to do so.

Overall, this is a lovely book, and it is one I recommend wholeheartedly. Since this is a book review, I feel obligated to discuss all my observations; but before I get into nit-picking, I want to emphasize that the positives here are many, and the shortcomings are exceptionally few.

A few of the photographs in this book have backgrounds or other details that distract from the needlework. In some cases, it’s the garments worn underneath the shawls that provide the distraction. This is not an issue with the vast majority of the projects in the book.

I would have liked to see more photos of a few of these projects. Most of the photography in this book is outstanding. For the most part, the designs are photographed sufficiently as to give enough detail that you’d have the confidence to know what you’re knitting before you get started. However, a few of the photographs are front views that leave it to your imagination and deductive reasoning powers to determine what the back of the shawls might look like.

Conclusion

I’m delighted to recommend this book to other knitting enthusiasts, particularly to knitters who are interested in making eye-catching shawls using upscale yarns. My opinion is that this book offers you exceptional value for the money you spend on it.
