If you’re thinking of creating a paper craft project with a romantic theme, floral theme or a winter theme, Stamperia’s Blue Land paper collection is worth your consideration. The designs in this collection incorporate roses, florals, evergreen trees, charming snow-covered cottages, rustic wagon wheels, and delightful wintery scenes that are vaguely reminiscent of the old-fashioned illustrations popularized by the Victorian-era company known as Currier and Ives.

List of the Supplies You’ll Find in the Blue Land Paper Collection by Stamperia

  • Silicon Frame Mould

  • Blue Land Assorted Die-Cut Shapes
  • Blue Land Colored Wooden Shapes
  • The Blue Land Color Scheme: Main Colors Used in These Papers, Embellishments and Other Supplies:

This paper collection’s color palette is beautiful, but it is quite limited. These papers and supplies are predominantly – you guessed it! – shades of blue. The blues from this collection are mostly medium tones, with some white accents.

These papers are colored quite beautifully, and the color scheme is appealing overall.

    BUT!

What they are really missing is contrast.

I hold a bachelor’s degree with a studio art minor. Over the years, Professor Joseph Monk, who used to be the chairperson of Sweet Briar College’s art department, is one of the artists who was most influential on me and my creative process.

Professor Monk used to say that most successful art pieces are 50% light, and 50% dark. He used to advise his students that if they weren’t liking the outcome on any of their art projects, they should take a careful look at the balance between light and dark tones in the project. He said that many times, you can fix unidentifiable problems by simply adjusting the ratio of light to dark tones.

Well, I don’t think Professor Monk was wrong about that, and his advice has served me well over the years.

And, although I love Stamperia’s Blue Land paper and its lovely color palette, I have to say that it is missing deep contrasts between light and dark.

So, as I was making projects with these papers, I kept running into problems relating to overloads of medium-blue. I found that the problems could only be fixed by introducing either bold, dark paint colors, or dark-colored papers from other paper collections.

So although this paper collection is stunning overall, I’d advise mixing in some papers from other collections that have contrasting darker blues, and perhaps also some other colors like browns and oranges.

There were several ways I’ve done this in my projects. You might prefer to take a different approach than the ones I did, but I’ll share what I did in case the information would be helpful to you.

My top recommended solution for this issue is to introduce some dramatically dark-colored papers from other collections into the paper crafts projects you’ll make using Stamperia’s Blue Land collection. Momentarily, I will share suggestions for some of the other papers that I have already found to work well with this collection – so if you’re interested in learning about those, please keep reading.

And my second solution for this issue is to use a broad variety of royal blue, navy blue, orange and brown-hued paints, inks, pens, markers and other mixed media supplies to the mix of art and craft supplies you’ll use for creating your Blue Land projects.

I’ll share some suggestions for those, momentarily, as well – but if you’re an artist or paper crafter, and you already have some paints and inks in your craft supplies stash, you probably don’t need to buy anything new. You’re likely to already have some paints or inks that’ll work fine for this purpose.

But I do have a suggestion for one specific product you probably don’t already have stashed that make the PERFECT eye-catching backdrop for these Blue Land papers, and it can also serve one other very important function in your art making process.

So if you’re interested in trying a new product right now that I highly recommend using along with these Blue Land papers, here’s what I suggest:

Jane Davenport’s Joyful Gess-OH! in the “Delightful Denim” Colorway Blended With Small Hints of Joyful Gess-OH! in the Ecstasy Cyan Color

You can read more about Jane Davenport’s Joyful Gess-OH! in my detailed product review; but, briefly, this product is part gesso / primer, and part paint. If you’re crafting on top of a surface like raw, unfinished chipboard, and you plan to paint your project, you can save yourself a massive amount of time by using Joyful Gess-OH!

And this is what I did to make some of my Blue Land projects. I was using spiral-bound notebooks with raw, unfinished chipboard covers. I painted the covers with lightly blended combinations of Joyful Gess-OH! that were mostly made up of the “Delightful Denim” color but also included hints of other colors, including the Ecstasy Cyan color.

So, that’s how I solved the not-enough-color-contrast problem with these papers. Considering that issue is easily solvable, I don’t see it as being a deal breaker, and I would highly, highly, HIGHLY recommend the papers to other crafters.

Craft Projects You Can Make Using the Blue Land Paper Collection by Stamperia

As I mentioned above, I have been using Stamperia’s Blue Land papers to make notebooks and junk journals, but there are many other types of projects you can use this paper for:

    Similar Paper Collections by Stamperia

Stamperia has produced many other delightful paper craft supplies besides the Blue Land collection. If you’d like to see some additional options, check out the following suggestions, which are similar:

The Roseland Collection by Stamperia — This collection is similar to the Blue Land collection because the imagery between the two collections overlaps, but it differs because the papers and embellishments are all printed in shades of pink instead of blue. You might want to check out this collection if you’re looking for pink papers to use for scrapbooking, mixed media art, card making or other paper crafts.

But if you’re not in love with the imagery from the Blue Land collection, you aren’t likely to love the imagery from the Roseland collection, either. In that case, check out Stamperia’s Winter Valley collection, which is another stunning winter-themed paper collection.

If you’re planning to use blue-colored supplies from the Blue Land collection by Stamperia, you might find it useful to learn about additional blue craft supplies that could complement these papers and their other coordinating embellishments and supplies.

Conversely, if you’re not planning to use any supplies from the Blue Land collection, but you’re hoping to use similarly-colored craft supplies, you might be interested in learning about blue alternatives.

In either case, you’re invited to check out this page of blue craft supplies, which offers you bunches of additional suggestions for paper collections and other related supplies you might want to consider using.

I already mentioned Jane Davenport’s blue colorways of Joyful Gess-OH, which I see as being the top priority items to look at from this page. You might also want to check out Tim Holtz’s Chipped Sapphire suite of mixed media art products, and Altenew’s Sapphire ink pads.

Similar Winter-Themed Paper Collections by Echo Park

Echo Park is an American manufacturer that often makes winter-themed paper collections available. I turned to their collections to find supplies that would harmonize well with the Blue Land collection but that would also offer enough dramatic contrasts to make the resulting projects seem interesting and eye-catching.

I used papers and chipboard embellishments from the “Welcome Winter” collection to accomplish this, and I highly recommend combining elements from “Welcome Winter” with elements from “Blue Land.”

The two collections have some similarities but also some dramatic differences. Both are winter-themed paper collections, but the imagery in both is starkly different. The color schemes in both collections are also starkly different, and I think this is what makes them so interesting to use together.

So I enjoyed the creative challenges of taking elements from these two collections to use together. If that idea would be interesting to you, I invite you to give it a try.
