The Focus of This Book:

This book has two primary focuses. The first is teaching you how to do the mosaic crochet technique. The book starts off with a fantastic, full-color photo tutorial showing you how to do one of the mosaic crochet stitch patterns. The crochet hat patterns are the second focus of the book; once you’ve learned the basics of mosaic crochet, you can take what you’ve learned and use it to crochet these stylish hats.

The Best Things About This Book

These hats are all novel and eye catching. Even if you already own some crochet hat pattern books, the chances are good that you don’t already have any patterns quite like these.

These hats are all super interesting crochet projects. It is absolutely fascinating to watch these mosaic patterns develop as you work them.

These are all unisex hat designs, with sizing suitable for men, women and teens. The hats would look great on anybody.

I think the mosaic crochet tutorial is clear and helpful.

The styling and photography presented in the book are likewise clear and helpful. The stylist chose clothing that perfectly complements the hat designs. The photographs are interesting, in focus, clear and free of unnecessary distractions.

The book’s format is logical, straightforward and user friendly. The fonts are clean and readable.

This book is both a pattern book and a technique book, wrapped into one short, sweet, concise, affordable volume. As such, this book offers you an amazing amount of value for its asking price.

The book was printed in the USA, which is wonderful for several reasons. Some competing craft books are printed in China or other faraway countries — but shipping books such long distances is not ideal from an environmental standpoint, considering the target market for this book is North American crocheters. Also, since workers in the United States are presumably paid fair wages for their work, there are no fair trade issues to be concerned with.

Other Observations About This Book

These hats are all quite similar to each other in style; they’re all slouchy beanies with ribbing. Different mosaic crochet stitch patterns and colors are the major differentiating factors that make each hat in the book stand out from the others.

This book DOES NOT include any charts — no symbol crochet charts and no color charts. The hat patterns are presented as written text instructions.

The author of this book, Melissa Leapman, is one of the rock stars of crochet. She has attained a level of design expertise that’s unmatched by many of the other crochet pattern designers, authors and bloggers who are writing competing pattern books in this space (which is another one of the many reasons you’d want to buy this book — and her other books, too!)

This is in part because Melissa has been designing crochet patterns for more than 28 years! In that time period, she has also written a significant number of knitting and crochet books.

One of her other books is a stitch dictionary that includes both charts and written instructions for some of these mosaic crochet stitches, plus others. So if you would be interested in having charts for most (but not all!) of the stitches she used for crocheting these hats, you might want to consider adding both this book plus Melissa’s stitch dictionary to your crochet library.

Her stitch dictionary is called Melissa Leapman’s Indispensable Stitch Collection for Crocheters.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Melissa about the book awhile back — and in the interview, we discussed some of the stitches and techniques covered in it. If that sounds interesting to you, you’re invited to check out the interview here.

I want to point out something important: It IS NOT ESSENTIAL for you to have charts in order to understand, use and enjoy the mosaic crochet technique. Learn to Crochet Mosaic Hats totally stands on its own as a pattern book.

Crochet charts are time-consuming to prepare, and they require special software and expertise. When they’re included in a pattern book, their presence can add on to the cost of that book substantially. Learn to Crochet Mosaic Hats is totally affordable — and that is another one of its major selling points. I am sure its price would be higher if charts had been included. So I really don’t see it as automatically being a downside that the book doesn’t include charts.

But, having said that, a lot of crocheters prefer working from charts — and, if that’s you, you’d most likely be glad to have both books. I think they make wonderful companions, and I’m super glad I have both of them in my crochet library. If your pattern budget permits, I highly recommend buying, using and enjoying both books.

One More Important Thing to Be Aware Of: This book was originally published in 2016; it is now 2026. So, this book will celebrate its tenth anniversary this year. Overall, the book has aged well.

Beanies are one of the top hat trends of 2026.

However, the hats presented in this book are slouchy beanies, and the most fashionable beanie silhouettes right now are not this slouchy. They are more fitted.

Perhaps you don’t care about what the “top trendsetters” in the world’s fashion capitals are doing or wearing. Some people do, but many do not.

If you care about copying the top trendsetters and what they are wearing, you might want to pick a different book than this one — or you might want to modify the patterns in this book to make them more fitted and less slouchy.

I haven’t tested this idea to see how it would work in actual practice. But, looking at these patterns, I think you would have to omit the rounds in each pattern, located toward the top of the hat, that make the designs slouchy. Well, it would take some re-engineering to do that, but I think it would be doable — and doing that would make the hats even quicker to finish, so as far as I’m concerned, it would be a win.

Or, there is one other option: wait a few years, because sooner or later, slouchy beanies will be back in style. That’s because fashion is cyclical; there are only so many different ways to design a hat.

Conclusion

I’m a huge fan of Melissa Leapman’s work, and I’ve never yet been disappointed by one of her books. This book is no exception — it is a truly outstanding reference, and I’m delighted to recommend it to other crochet enthusiasts. If you’d like to either make new hats or learn the mosaic crochet technique, this book is a fantastic choice for either purpose.
