This book features patterns and instructions for making 5 different flowers on the flower loom; there are also patterns, instructions and ideas for finishing these flower motifs using crochet or hot glue gun techniques to create 8 wearable, feminine accessories.

This chic crocheted purse is adorned with three loom-made flowers.

Fancy Barrette

This is a super easy project that’s a good one to start out with if you are new to the flower looming technique. This project doesn’t require any crochet work, and it’s one of the easier flower designs to work on — yet the results look extra special.

Cozy Crochet Ear Warmer Headband

This is an extra-wide, adult-sized headband that looks like a warm and practical project. It’s unique and fashionable; and the loomed flower lends an interesting finishing touch to the look. If I were to make this design, I’d be inclined to choose a different yarn, perhaps one with a bit of a halo, to make the design look even cozier — and I’d want to supersize that flower! Which you can easily do by choosing a thicker, bulkier yarn than the one suggested in the pattern instructions. In some cases, if you go REALLY big on the yarn, you might have to use a larger loom or the next set of pegs on the same loom (depending on your loom) — but a lot of times things work out OK if you just use a bulkier yarn on the same loom.

Rustic Brooch

This project is my favorite one in the book. The project sample is made using an interesting raffia yarn, and the results are simply lovely. It’s absolutely the perfect yarn for the project; but the authors give you instructions for using alternate yarns and ribbon in case you want to experiment with some other looks.

This is another easy project that doesn’t require any crochet. So if your crochet skills are a little rusty (or totally nonexistant), that won’t hold you back from successfully completing this brooch.

Swirl Beret

This clever hat design features a loomed flower at the center top, and then crochet work radiates out from there. It looks like it would be an interesting project to work on.

Petal Shawl

Depending on the yarn you use for making this delightful shawl, you could dress it up or down. Pictured here, you can see it dressed up. It would be an adorable way to accessorize a prom dress or party dress. I think this could be an incredible excuse to buy some of the colorful recycled silk yarns I’ve been dying to try. I could also see using more casual yarns to make a dressed-down version of this shawl.

Flower Loom Crochet gives you an affordable and accessible way to get new instructions and ideas for flower looming techniques.

The projects in this book are really creative, chic and beautiful. I can see making all of them several times using different materials to keep things interesting.

These projects are also gift worthy. If you need DIY gift ideas for casual friends, colleagues, neighbors or distant relatives, this book has some patterns that I’m positive would really be useful to you. For example, if you have an oddball skein of novelty yarn or other nice yarn, you could transform it into multiple fancy flower barrettes using these instructions.

If you’re into scrapbooking, card making or other paper crafts, you’ll never again have to overspend on Prima flowers or similar flowers — you’ll be able to make your own flowers for all your paper craft projects using scraps of ribbon and yarn left over from other projects. That’s a BIG WIN! Most paper crafters who go through a lot of flowers could potentially save much more than the upfront cost of this book just by doing that!

The styling in this book is helpful and evocative without being distracting. I think most crafters will be able to look at the carefully-styled photos in this book and make an informed decision about whether each project is one they want to work on, or not.

Overall, I think you get more than your money’s worth for this book. It’s a fantastic value for the money.

Skill Level: The projects in this book are all rated as easy and intermediate, so you won’t find anything overly challenging here. If you’re a beginner or you haven’t crocheted in awhile, there are projects in the book that don’t require any crochet work; you can start out with those and then work your way up to the other projects. There is a helpful stitch guide included if you need to refresh your memory on any of the basic crochet stitches.

Supplies You Will Need to Make the Projects in This Book

You’ll need a flower loom plus yarn, ribbon, or other fiber for all the projects in this book. The Clover Hana-Ami flower loom is the suggested loom for making all these projects, but there are many other brands of looms that would work equally well. For some of the projects, you’ll need various crochet hooks. For others, you’ll need a hot glue gun and some small things like jewelry findings or buttons. A tapestry needle and scissors also helpful to have for making all of these projects.

Other Observations About This Book

For the most part, the photography in the book is clear, helpful and adequate to show you what you need to know to make these projects. The one exception: I really would have appreciated having a couple of additional photos of the clutch — how it looks when opened and how it looks on the sides. There is a diagram that shows how to put the pieces together, which I do appreciate, but having photos would have been even more helpful.

Considering this book’s short length, there’s a fantastic variety of patterns, projects and ideas included. They’re all wearable and usable; none of them are duds, although you might wish to re-color some of them (like the Petal shawl pictured on the front cover) to fit better into your own wardrobe. If you don’t own a purple dress like the one pictured, imagine the shawl worked in white, beige, gray or red yarn — or whichever color might look best with the party dresses you do own.

There are no symbol crochet charts included in this book. The flower loom technique is presented via line art illustrations, which I found clear and intuitive to understand. The crochet instructions are presented in the form of written text instructions. Diagrams are included in several of the patterns to help you understand the necessary details for putting your projects together.

Conclusion

I think Flower Loom Crochet is a fantastic book. There’s a jaw-dropping amount of information available to you here considering the slim size of the book — there’s a TON of value packed into this thin, portable leaflet. The projects in the book are much nicer, and obviously MUCH more up-to-date, than any of the vintage flower loom pattern books I’ve owned.

Overall, this book is a good value for its asking price, although you’re likely to find it discounted if you shop online (which makes it an even better value). I’m delighted to recommend this book to other craft enthusiasts.
