Want to Try Making a Quilt Design With Appliqued Circles?
If you’re looking for inspiration for your next quilting project, check out this sophisticated Steampunk quilt pattern by Jen Kingwell.
One of the most interesting and unique features of this pattern: It features perfectly round appliqued circles in the center of each quilt block.
Some quilters let curves intimidate them — but I hope you won’t let that stop you from stitching this design, if it appeals to you.

If you want to take on the challenge of stitching circles and curves, I think this pattern is a fantastic choice to consider.
Please keep in mind: You have to use your imagination when you look at these work-in-progress photos, because in these pics, the appliqued circles haven’t yet been added to the center of the design — and that makes a massive difference in how the quilt blocks end up looking.
Things to Keep in Mind When You Choose Fabrics for Your Steampunk Quilt
I think this design works best when there’s a significant amount of contrast between the background and the foreground.
So, you might wish to stay consistent with choosing light-colored fabrics for the background, and medium or darker-colored fabrics for the motifs.
And, I think the design is most effective when the round applique in the center of the design strongly contrasts with the other design elements; it is visually satisfying when that circle is a vivid color that “pops.”
