Do you spend time on art or craft projects such as painting, stenciling, stamping, or spraying on paper, chipboard or similar porous surfaces?

If so, you’ll benefit from using a primer or gesso on your paper before you get started with creating your art.

Why Use Primer or Gesso for Painting, Stamping, Stenciling or Other Mixed Media Art Techniques?

A primer will help you achieve the best possible results when using wet media on paper. It’s useful for helping your paper to resist buckling and warping.

Many papers and similar porous surfaces, like chipboard, can be “thirsty” and highly absorbent. Your surface might have a tendency to suck up lots of the ink, paint or other media you’re applying. You can fight this to a certain degree by applying primer or gesso, and this can help to minimize the amount of paint or ink you’ll use in your projects.

Primer is also likely to improve your project’s longevity.

I like to paint on unusual surfaces that weren’t necessarily intended to be painted on (like book covers, for example.) If there’s any doubt in my mind whether or not paint or other media will adhere well to the surface I’m trying to embellish, I am going to first clean that surface carefully and then prime it with primer or gesso.

There Are a Lot of Primers and Gesso Products Out There. Why Would I Want to Use Jane Davenport’s Joyful Gess-OH! for My Project Instead of Any of the Other Primer Alternatives?

If you’re convinced that your projects would benefit from gesso or primer, perhaps you’re wondering which primer or gesso you should use for the types of projects you have in mind?

I suggest using Joyful Gess Oh in cases where you want to save time by priming and painting the first layer of your project in one step.

Let me explain what I mean by that.

You have lots of options for gesso and primer colors. Several of the most popular options are white, black and clear.

A lot of times, crafters paint white gesso onto their paper as the first layer.

Then they paint over the white gesso with a colored base layer of paint.

But that can take a lot of time to do, especially if you live in a humid environment.

And if you are a prolific artist or crafter, and you have a lot of projects going at once, drying time can create bottlenecks in how much you’re actually able to accomplish in a day.

The bottlenecks get even worse if you don’t have a sizable space available for crafting.

So, this product offers you a shortcut around some of the overall amount of time you need to invest for completing projects. Instead of painting a white primer layer and a colored paint layer, you could use any of the non-white colors of Jane Davenport’s Joyful Gess Oh! to do your priming and to also create a lovely, vibrant, solid-colored layer in one step. Easy peasy!

Or you could use multiple colors of it together to create a multicolored first layer.

I’m totally in love with this product for a number of reasons:

  • This product’s color palette is indescribably gorgeous! It is vibrant and beautiful, and these colors all mix well with each other.

  • This product really has been an amazing shortcut for me. By using it on projects where I’d ordinarily use a white primer, I am cutting down the amount of time spent on each of my projects substantially. That’s a huge, HUGE win!

Downsides (Cons) to Jane Davenport’s Joyful Gess Oh! Cosmic Shimmer

My experiences with Joyful Gess Oh! Cosmic Shimmer have all been positive so far.

However, there is one big downside to this product: It is relatively expensive, even on sale.

If you have more time than money, this might not be the best way to spend your money. In that case, you might prefer to buy cheaper primer and cheaper paint, and to take the extra time needed to apply both to your work surfaces. There is no shame in that.

But if you have more money than time, I think you are going to love this product. Yes, it is pricier than most similar paints and most similar primers – but if you believe that time is money, then you’re definitely going to understand the benefits of using this product. In that case, I think you will be totally, completely thrilled with it.

The Verdict: It’s Too Soon for Me to Tell How Well This Product Will Work in the Long Term, But I Am SUPER HAPPY With It So Far.

Presumably, Ecstasy Cyan Joyful Gess Oh! Cosmic Shimmer will work as expected in the long term.

However, I have only begun using it within the past 12 months, so it is too early for me to report any long-term results with it.

That said, I have been beyond thrilled with the results I’ve achieved with this product so far.

For short-term considerations, like creating appealing hand-painted backgrounds on chipboard and paper surfaces, this product has exceeded my expectations.

I recommend this product to other crafters who are in need of beautiful colored gesso or primer for enhancing the performance of their media and paper when creating art or craft projects.
