DMC Satin Embroidery Floss

TLDR Summary: DMC Satin Embroidery Floss is a vegan-friendly, shiny, lustrous, silky, colorfast, washable, divisible, 6-strand embroidery floss that resembles silk but is made of 100% rayon. I highly recommend it!

Our Full Review of DMC Satin Embroidery Floss:

DMC Satin is a colorfast, washable, divisible, six strand embroidery floss that’s useful for cross stitch, embroidery, needlepoint, crochet, and other types of needlework. There’s one important thing that differentiates DMC Satin embroidery floss from other types of embroidery floss; it’s made of 100% rayon, which gives it a luminous, silky shine. Although this floss is so lustrous that it does resemble silk, it’s also perfectly useful by vegans, vegetarians, or any people who don’t want to pay the high price for silk embroidery floss. Although DMC Satin Embroidery Floss tends to be more expensive than ordinary mercerized cotton embroidery flosses, it is wayyyyyyyyy cheaper and more affordable than silk embroidery floss is.

DMC Satin embroidery floss is also more readily available than silk embroidery floss is. You can find it at most online craft supply retailers. A Cherry on Top Craft Store is my favorite place to buy it; I highly recommend their store and their service — plus the last time I checked, they had an outstanding selection of DMC Satin colors in stock at their store. They ship FAST, they offer one-stop shopping on art and craft supplies, and they typically offer discounts or free shipping with a minimum purchase.

Is DMC Satin Embroidery Floss Washable?

Yes! Yes, DMC Satin embroidery floss is washable and colorfast, unlike many other embroidery flosses. In particular, you have to watch out for vintage embroidery flosses; the colors on many other flosses will bleed and ruin your projects if you wash them. So this is definitely an important consideration; if you are going to take all the time to stitch a cross stitch or embroidery project, you don’t want it to be ruined if you decide you want to wash it. And this is definitely an issue if you want to cross stitch directly on a project like a pillowcase or sheet that needs to be washed frequently.

DMC suggests washing DMC Satin Embroidery Floss in water temperature measuring 60° C/140° F unless the fabric you’ve stitched on requires a cooler temperature. It’s best to hand wash delicate embroidered pieces to ensure longevity, but the rayon fiber used in DMC Satin can withstand machine washing if you decide you’re willing to risk it.

Tips for Stitching With DMC Satin Embroidery Floss

Here’s a tip from the manufacturer: DMC explains that it is easier to thread your needle with DMC Satin Embroidery Floss if you moisten the floss with a damp cloth before proceeding to gain improved control over the thread. Another important tip from DMC: You might accidentally get your floss twisted up as you are stitching. If this happens, simply drop your needle and allow the floss to unwind. You can gently help it along if it doesn’t untwist all the way.

DMC Satin Is Packaged in Skeins and Also Sometimes Sold in Special Box Sets

DMC Satin Embroidery Floss is packaged and sold in a variety of configurations. At some stores, you are able to buy single skeins that are each sold separately. DMC sometimes also offers special box sets of this floss that come packaged with unique, lovely, appealing cross stitch or needlework patterns you’d definitely want to consider working on. I’ve purchased it both ways — both single skeins and a box set. I was able to get a slightly better price on the box set, but beware, because I’ve also seen some retailers sell the box set for prices that are more expensive than the single-skein price. It is worth noting that you might still find it to be worth paying a bit more for the box set if you are interested in working one of the patterns that comes included with it. That just depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

I have the “Pastel Whispers” Collection, which comes with several cross stitch and embroidery patterns, plus eight luxurious DMC Satin Thread skeins, all of which are light colors or pastel colors:

  • Cornflower Blue S798
  • Sky Blue S800
  • Delicate Salmon S352
  • Rose S899
  • Powder Pink S818
  • Tender Green S472
  • S553
  • S7444

How Much Thread do You Get in a Skein of DMC Satin Embroidery Floss?

A typical skein of DMC Satin Embroidery Floss measures 8.7 yards / 8 meters. This floss is made in France, a country renowned for high-end luxury items, and this floss definitely lives up to the luxury and opulence you’d expect of a French-made item.

I personally think DMC Satin is absolutely gorgeous. It is 100% worth buying, in my opinion, and I highly recommend it to other crafters.
