Instructions for Using Stamperia’s Aquacolor Spray

In theory, it should be really easy to use Stamperia’s Aquacolor spray. It comes in a small 60 ml spray bottle, and you should be able to just shake the bottle and squirt the product onto your project.

When it works as intended, it is super simple to use, and you don’t even need additional supplies like sponges, spatulas or paintbrushes to use it.

However, the spray bottle doesn’t always work as intended.

I have several bottles of this product. The brown leather (Cuoio) color works fine for me, but the spray bottle the Pearl White iridescent color came in doesn’t work for me. I’m not sure if I just got a dud bottle (that happens) or if there’s something about the iridescent spray that is prone to clogging the bottle.

The Pearl White does have mica in it, and it’s theoretically possible that the mica could clog the bottle, maybe.

I love products that have mica and, as an ingredient, I prefer mica to titanium dioxide, so I’m personally willing to endure whatever other inconveniences might result.

If you end up with a clogged bottle, you can still use the product by dipping a paintbrush into it and painting it onto your project. This is what I’ve been doing with it.

It would theoretically also be possible to transfer it to another container like another spray bottle.

So, it’s kind of hit or miss whether you’ll need additional supplies like paintbrushes or extra spray bottles to use this product.

Stamperia’s Aquacolor Spray Is Messy!

Before you buy this product, you should be aware that you can make a real mess with this stuff if you aren’t careful!

This is a feature, not a bug. Welcome to using mixed media sprays! Every other spray I’ve ever used has the same caveats (this product is similar to many others I’ve used including Tim Holtz’s Distress Mica sprays and Tsukineko’s Walnut Ink sprays – you can make just as big of a mess with those products, too.)

So before you start spraying, it’s ideal if you can prepare a work surface.

If you have a sizable craft mat, you can work overtop of that.

If you have a cardboard box big enough to hold your project, you can place the project inside the box before you spray it, and the splatters will collect on the sides of the box instead of settling all over your furniture.

Otherwise, if you’re working at a table or desk, you’ll want to cover it up with old newspapers, a painter’s drop cloth of some similar protective material.

Once you get set up with a solution to safeguard against messes, it is ultra easy to use this stuff.

The Verdict: I Highly Recommend Stamperia’s Aquacolor Spray.

I love this stuff!

So far, the Pearl White Iridescent color is my favorite. It adds a layer of shimmer to projects that otherwise aren’t shimmery. It doesn’t cover other colors completely, so you shouldn’t buy this if what you really need is an opaque white paint.

The other colors behave somewhat differently than the Pearl White does. The Cuoio brown color isn’t iridescent and doesn’t shimmer. I’ve been using it to make winter-themed projects to tone down the brightness of the pale blue and winter white colors in some of my winter-themed papers (like the blues in Stamperia’s Blue Land collection, for example.)

Craft Project Ideas Featuring Aquacolor Spray by Stamperia

As I was making this scrapbooking layout, I realized that some of the colors in my patterned paper were clashing with the colors in my photo.

I’d never used the Pearl White color of Aquacolor before, and I didn’t realize that it wouldn’t work the same way as the Cuoio does (I’d used the Cuoio color before.)

But I thought the Pearl White looked like a good choice for hiding that color; the Cuoio would have done the job, but it also would have ended up looking too dark and heavy. I wanted a lighter effect that would sort of fade into the background, keeping the photo as the most interesting thing on the page.

The bottle of Aquacolor looked like a good choice for camouflaging the offending color, so I grabbed it and attempted to spray it onto the paper. I ended up having to grab a paintbrush and daub it onto the paper instead, and the Aquacolor didn’t cover the clashing color in the paper.

So I let it dry, and then I painted Stamperia’s white primer overtop of the Aquacolor. That worked better.

Then I applied more Pearl White Aquacolor overtop of the primer.

The resulting effect was just what I wanted!

I wish I could show you this page in person, because my photo of it doesn’t do it justice at all. You can’t see the shimmer in my photo, and the shimmer really makes a difference in how interesting the page looks.

(Oh well.)

So if there are any pages you have that would benefit from a little hint of shimmer, definitely give the Pearl White color a try.

And if you have any too-bright pages that could do with a bit of toning down, you could try misting small amounts of the Cuoio color onto them to see if that helps. I think it is lovely for toning down too-bright blues that need to be “wintery-er.”

I look forward to trying other colors, too. I have the Turquoise but haven’t done much with it yet, and I wouldn’t hesitate to try other colors of this product based on my positive experiences with the colors I already purchased.
