Shell stitches have intrigued crochet enthusiasts for more than a century, and they continue to delight and interest us today as well. There’s something so satisfying about crocheting each perfect little grouping of shell stitches — and about completing each new row in the pattern.

This blanket design makes use of contemporary colors to add freshness to a much-beloved classic shell stitch pattern.

Do you enjoy the process of combining different colors together to see what will happen? I sure do. If you share my enthusiasm for this, you might enjoy creating a colorful baby blanket like the one shown here.

If you find colorwork a little intimidating, don’t worry, you’re not alone in that — and in this particular pattern you don’t need to let that stop you. Each square in this design only has three colors, which is not an overwhelming number to work with. Even better, there are no more than two colors in each row of this design, which makes the pattern much easier than it looks.

While this isn’t a beginner’s pattern by any means, I’ve heard from many crocheters who have completed baby blankets using this pattern — and a number of them have remarked that it was easier than they thought it would be.

It’s exciting to customize a baby blanket that’s perfect for the tiny new arrival you’re expecting — and this pattern makes it soooo easy for you to accomplish that. You could crochet this blanket in several different sizes, including crib size or receiving blanket size (among others; there are also sizes for older kids and grown-ups if you would ever have a use for those.)

When I designed the colorway you see pictured, I had baby boys in mind; however, I think the colors and design would be just as appropriate for older kids too — and even for grown-ups. There are plenty of other colorways that would work well in this pattern; it’s really easy to re-color, so please do experiment with using your own color choices.
