Cross stitch is typically considered to be a subset of the needlework, sewing and embroidery categories in crafting. To cross stitch, you’d usually use a blunt hand-sewing needle such as a tapestry needle or darning needle to stitch in x-shaped configurations onto Aida cloth or other fabric. You can stitch a broad variety of different pictures or designs onto your fabric using this method.
Popular cross stitch projects include samplers, wall art, baby projects, pillows, greeting cards, clothing items, Christmas stockings, Christmas ornaments and pincushions. There are many other possible types of cross stitch projects beyond these.
Cross Stitch on Crochet
You have many possible choices for fabrics to cross stitch on top of. One of my favorites is cross stitching onto a background of hand-crocheted fabric. You can create bunches of different types of projects using this technique.
In the 1970s, cross-stitch-on-crochet was a significant craft trend. I have bunches of different cross-stitch-on-crochet patterns from this era; most of them are blankets worked in afghan stitch featuring decorative cross stitch on top. Some of the designs are floral and others are pictorial designs featuring horses and other intricate motifs.
My own favorite project for this type of design is the humble crocheted potholder. I’ve shared multiple free patterns for cross-stitch-on-crochet potholders, and I’ve also made bunches more potholders by simply using other cross stitch designers patterns and stitching them onto potholders instead of the usual Aida fabric.
