Learn How to Do Double Treble Crochet Stitch With These Free Instructions

While the double treble crochet is considered to be one of the basic crochet stitches, it isn’t used all that frequently in contemporary crochet patterns. However, people do still use it, and it’s used quite often in vintage crochet patterns, so it’s definitely a worthwhile stitch to know.

The double treble crochet is a tall stitch, but it isn’t the tallest; actually, there really isn’t a “tallest,” considering that (in theory) you could always make a taller stitch. But the triple treble crochet, which is just about the tallest practical crochet stitch, is taller than this stitch.

I think you’ll see what I mean by “practical” when you try crocheting this stitch, and the triple treble too. While these tall, spindly stitches are doable, they’re a bit cumbersome. My opinion is that anything taller is impractical in comparison. While it’s possible to make taller stitches, there isn’t much motivation that I can see for doing so.

If double treble stitches don’t immediately flow off your crochet hook, don’t worry, that’s normal. If you’re like most people, you’ll have to practice them a bit before you get really comfortable with them.

How to Do the Double Treble Crochet Stitch

• Begin with an active loop on your hook. You could get an active loop by crocheting a starting chain, if you want to work in rows to create a piece of double treble crochet fabric.
• Wrap your yarn or thread around your hook three times.
• Insert your hook into the spot you want to work your double treble crochet. If you’re crocheting into a starting chain, you’ll usually want to work a treble crochet stitch into the 6th chain from your hook. If you’re working your double treble crochet stitch into another stitch, you’ll usually want to work it through both loops of the stitch to make a standard double treble crochet.
• Grab the yarn with your hook and pull it through the work, without pulling it through the other loops quite yet. You’ll have 5 loops on your hook.
• Wrap the yarn over your crochet hook again.
• Grab the yarn with your hook and pull it through the closest two loops on your hook. You’ll have 4 loops left on your hook.
• Wrap the yarn over your crochet hook again.
• Grab the yarn with your hook and pull it through the closest two loops on your hook. You’ll have 3 loops left on your hook.
• Wrap the yarn over your crochet hook again.
• Grab the yarn with your hook and pull it through the closest two loops on your hook. You’ll have 2 loops left on your hook.
• Wrap the yarn over your crochet hook again.
• Grab the yarn with your hook and pull it through the remaining two loops on your hook.
• Your double treble crochet stitch is now complete.
