Double Rainbow Crochet Square Pattern

Double Rainbow Crochet Square Pattern

Double Rainbow Crochet Square Pattern

This easy crocheted square features a double rainbow design. When you make this square, put your brightest and most prominent color in the center and and then create stripes of glorious color radiating outward. In my sample square, red is the central color — but you could substitute a bright pink if you like, and there are also bunches of other wonderful possibilities.

If you have yarn scraps left over from other projects, this square offers you an excellent option for using them up. If you have cotton yarn scraps, try making them into a dishcloth using this pattern. Keep in mind that you could re-color this pattern using any random yarn colors you happen to have on hand. Turn those bits and pieces of scrap yarn into something useful!

Crochet Skill Level: Easy

Supplies You’ll Need for Crocheting This Square:

Worsted weight yarn in 5 different colors. The project sample you see here is made from kitchen cotton in the following colors:

  • Red — Peaches & Creme
  • Orange — Sunburst, Peaches & Creme
  • Yellow — Peaches & Creme
  • Hot Green — Lily Sugar ‘n’ Cream
  • Light Blue — Peaches & Creme

The cotton yarn is a good choice if you want to use this square as a dishcloth. If you’d like to use this pattern for making afghan squares, you might want to crochet the design in wool instead; this weight of cotton yarn would be excessively heavy for an afghan. I highly recommend Cascade 220 yarn for this project, because it comes in a broad range of colors that will allow you to customize your ideal rainbow color palette. But of course, feel free to experiment with other fibers and / or yarns if you like.

Crochet Hook:

Size H / 8 – 5.0 mm

Other:

Tapestry Needle for weaving in ends

Finished Size:

The finished square measures 6 inches x 6 inches.

Gauge:

4 sts = 1 inch; 10 rows = 3 inches.

For most purposes, gauge is not going to be crucial for achieving success with this project. If for some reason you need each square to measure exactly 6 inches, be sure to match this gauge exactly.

Design Notes:

You’ll work this square entirely in front loop single crochet stitch. This stitch is simple; crochet the foundation chain and the first row as you normally would for single crochet. Then, starting with row 2, you just work your single crochet stitches in the front loops only.

You’ll need to know how to change colors in single crochet stitch. Anticipate your color changes at the end of the row before you want your new color to appear; then, before you complete the last step of the last stitch in the row before the color change, drop the old color and complete the last step of the last stitch in the row with the new color.

How to Crochet the Square:

Using blue, ch 25.

Striped Color Pattern:
