This odd, abstract little sunflower fits right in with the retro “mod” look that’s so popular these days.

Crochet Skill Level: Easy

Materials:

Yarn or Fiber: You’ll need two colors of yarn, crochet thread or other fiber: color A and color B. In my sample sunflower, color A is brown embroidery floss, and color B is yellow embroidery floss. You’ll want to use this color combination if you want your flower to look sunflower-ish, but your flowers don’t have to be sunflowers. Plus, there are lots of other colorways you could try. Feel free to use whatever colors and fibers strike your fancy.

Crochet Hook: I used a size 7 / 1.65 mm steel crochet hook for working the sample sunflower. I find this hook to be a bit on the small side for using with embroidery floss, but I like the look of the finished crochet at this tension, so that’s why I chose it. Since gauge isn’t critical for this project, it’s a good idea to choose a hook that’s comfortable for you to work with when using your chosen materials.

Other: Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Finished Sunflower Size: Varies, depending on the materials you use. My sample flower measures about 2 inches in diameter at the widest point.

Round 6: Insert hook in next st and grab color A. Using color A, work a round of surface crochet slip stitches to create emphasis in the spot where colors A and B meet. End off color A.

Weave in all loose ends. Block the sunflower if desired. When it is dry, it is ready to be used in the craft project or DIY project of your choice.
