Do you remember the 1990s fondly? Perhaps you recall how so many of the 1970s styles were reinvented and updated in the 1990s — including bell bottom pants and colorful tie-dyed t-shirts and festival clothing. This book is all about teaching you how to re-create the vibrant tie-dyed t-shirts that were so trendy in the 1990s.
In 2005-2006, I worked as an instructor teaching textile design techniques to fashion design majors at a design school in Los Angeles. Tie-dyeing was one of the techniques I taught to my students in the class.
When I applied for the job, I had a degree in textile design — and I had a lot of industry experience, plus I’d spent a lot of time dyeing my own fabrics for various craft projects and theatre costume designs. But, I didn’t have any actual experience with tie-dyeing. I had no idea how to make all those cool designs like spirals and heart shapes that people do.
I bought several books on the topic of tie dying, and this was one of those books. Between this book and several others, I was able to learn enough about tie dyeing to gain the expertise I needed to teach the artform to others.
This one is only 14 pages, so it isn’t the most in-depth reference available on the topic of tie-dyeing. However, this is one of the books I used most frequently, because I found it clear, helpful and easy to understand. I recommend it to other crafters who are interested in learning how to do multicolored tie dye projects.
