This book is focused on giving you wearable knitting patterns for ladies’ accessories including hats, scarves, cowls, ponchos, shawls, mittens, fingerless gloves, boot cuffs and more. Many of these patterns share a laid-back, casual vibe — although some of them could be dressed up or down, which makes them highly versatile wardrobe pieces.

Knitting Projects Included in This Book:

All together, I counted a total of 26 different items you can make using the patterns in this book. (The book cover says there are 25, but they’re counting a bracelet and choker set as one project; I counted it as 2 different items). The types of projects are as follows:

  • 6 ponchos, wraps and shawls
  • 6 scarves
  • 4 cowls
  • 2 hats
  • 1 pair of mittens
  • 1 pair of fingerless gloves
  • 1 pair of boot cuffs
  • 1 choker necklace
  • 1 cuff bracelet
  • 1 headband
  • 2 bags and purses

These pictures give you a glimpse at some, but not all, of the projects you’ll find in Casual Weekend Knits. A few of my favorite projects from the book are not pictured above; these include the “Chunky Scarf,” which is a basic, beginner-friendly knitting project; and the lace knit fingerless gloves. My other favorites from the book — the cable knit purse, the slip stitch scarf and the textured scarf — are all pictured above.

The Best Things About This Book

I think Andi Javori, the author of this book, has a special talent for designing impressive projects that are actually surprisingly easy to knit. The designs in this book are SO EASY to make, yet the results are amazingly pretty. When you have just the right pattern book guiding you (like this one), you don’t have to be an expert knitter to make truly lovely projects.

This book incorporates a nice diversity of knitting techniques including lace knitting, garter stitch, cable knitting, striped knitting and slip stitch knitting.

The photography and styling are done well, and they are super inspiring. These accessories are paired with outfits that show them off beautifully — without distracting from the details you’d want to see if you decide to knit the projects.

This book is an incredible bargain. The author, Andi, sells bunches of similar individual pattern downloads in her Ravelry store for prices ranging from $4.00 – $6.00 US each. People willingly pay those prices because her knitting patterns are beautiful and worthwhile. If you were to place a similar value on the patterns in this book, you’d be looking at a cost of somewhere between $100 – $150 US. But the cover price of this book is a modest $14.99 US ($17.99 in Canada.) which works out to about 60 cents US per pattern. That’s the cost of the paperback book; at the time of this posting, the asking price on the digital edition was even less, making the digital edition of the book even more of a bargain.

Folks, this book is an incredible value.

It would be possible to knit yourself almost all the accessories you’d need for fall and winter from just this one pattern book. Assuming you already have your actual clothing items like coats, jeans, shirts and dresses covered, sock patterns are pretty much the only other thing you’d need to revamp your entire wardrobe (there aren’t any sock knitting patterns included in this book. But if you need sock patterns, check out Knit Socks for Those You Love, also published by Leisure Arts, which has wearable basic sock patterns that would complement the projects from this book beautifully.)

About this book’s title: I think, overall, the title of this book tends to be accurate but is perhaps a bit limiting. Many of the fashions in this book could be dressed up OR down, so describing them as “casual” does them a bit of a disservice — because many of these items could work well if paired with dressy clothing, too. Like that stunning textured scarf…and the lovely triangle shawl… and the zigzag lace wrap…and the jewelry…

And same with the “weekend” aspect of the title. Quite a few of these pieces could be worn to work on weekdays with business attire, in addition to being worn on weekends.

The point I’m making here: Don’t hesitate to make these accessories for dressing up, going out, or wearing to work if that’s what you’d most need them for. They do also work quite well for weekend wear, too, as implied in the book’s title.

Conclusion

I’m delighted to recommend this book to other knitting enthusiasts, particularly to knitters who are in search of easy, stylish accessory patterns for fall and winter.
