2. Valentine Heart Pouch

Free Crochet Heart Pouch Pattern

This isn’t your typical crocheted pouch made of rectangles. Nope! It’s a cute heart-shaped pouch that’s just begging to be filled with small trinkets and treasures. If you make one of these, who would you give it to — and what would you fill it with?

My selfish secret: I kept my first one of these — and filled it with sweet little gift tags and cards my husband has given me over the years. I don’t keep all that many of my crochet projects around, but I love this one so much that I definitely think it’s a keeper.

Happily, I find this to be an interesting project to work on, and so I tend to make a few more heart pouches every January and February to give as Valentine gifts. I also think it’s fun to find interesting things to fill it with. I’ve mentioned a few more ideas on this page — and I’ve also linked you up to the free crochet pattern.

3. Crochet Baby Blanket With Heart Pattern

This soft, colorful baby blanket is based on two different crocheted square patterns that alternate. One is a striped heart square, and the other is a striped checkerboard square. To add visual interest, you can crochet each square in different colors — or not — whichever way you prefer.

If you use bunches of different colors in this pattern, it results in an eye-popping burst of color. If you use the same three colors for each square throughout, the results are less “busy,” and a little “calmer.” Either way, the blanket turns out gorgeous.

4. Basic Crochet Heart Applique

Basic Crochet Heart Applique — Free Pattern

This cute little elongated heart applique is just begging to be decorated. How would you embellish yours? I’ve dressed mine up bunches of different ways — with ribbons, buttons and beads. One option is pictured here on this page; I crocheted the heart using burgundy wool yarn and embellished it with a paisley printed wooden button. A brown ribbon bow is the finishing touch. 5. Crochet Heart Applique With Beads

This versatile heart design has a multitude of possible uses ranging from applique to ornament to photo frame. Dress it up with the beads of your choice. I used metallic beads in my sample project, but you could try using a colorful bead mix, or iridescent beads for a different look. Also, don’t be afraid to try beads in different shapes; see this snowflake pattern for an example of the same beadwork technique used with different-shaped beads.

  • Crochet Skill Level: The skill level rating for this pattern varies a bit depending on the materials you use. If worked in thread as pictured, it’s a bit fiddly. It gets easier if you choose a more substantial yarn, although the size of the project does grow accordingly.

See Also: I used my beaded heart shape to make a romantic scrapbooking layout. The beaded heart shape is useful for framing photos (that’s one possible use for it; I also like using it to stitch to hats, scarves and other wearable projects. If you’d like to try using it as a photo gframe, you’re invited to use our free instructions for making a romantic-themed scrapbooking layout using pretty patterned papers and scalloped scissors.

Want to crochet a set of heart coasters that’s really strong, durable and cushy? Because the coasters are made using the rag crochet technique, each one of them resembles a miniature rag rug. They’re the perfect surface to use for setting down your hot soup mug or morning coffee mug. You could also make these to use as trivets or hot pads.

There are at least 2 different edges you can crochet using a free chart we’ve posted here on our website. One is a simple filet crochet edge with alternating heart motifs. The other is a trim where the hearts are cross stitched onto a background of crochet stitches; then the piece is finished with a lovely, lacy picot stitch edging.
