Skill Level: The editorial team at Stackpole books has assigned a skill level rating of “easy” to most of the crochet patterns in this book. Some of the patterns have a skill level rating of “easy / intermediate”. I’m scratching my head over that; I’ve never seen a publisher assign that particular rating before. I’m guessing that maybe it means the pattern falls somewhere between easy and intermediate? At any rate, this is a book I’d feel confident in recommending to new crocheters.

The Focus of This Book:

This book is dedicated to giving you a variety of fun, stylish, adorable baby projects to crochet. The projects include numerous baby layette items including baby blankets, hats, sweaters, baby booties and diaper covers; you also get some fun patterns for crocheting baby toys and other goodies.

The sizes for the wearable items range from newborn to 12 months – so if making baby shower gifts is important to you, you will specifically find patterns that are suitable for that purpose.

The Best Things About This Book

As I mentioned above, Adorable Baby Crochet includes a whopping FORTY baby projects. FORTY!!! of them!

Folks, that’s a lot of projects!

There are all sorts of crochet books in all sorts of formats and lengths, but forty projects is far above the norm. In my experience, the average crochet or knitting book offers about 25 projects, give or take a few. This book gives you a truly satisfying number and variety of projects to work.

You might think that the book would cost a bit more, considering the number of projects you get– but nope, it’s actually a bit less than the usual cover price of $24.95 (The cover price of this book is only $22.95, and it’s possible that you might find it for less, because some online retailers might discount it).

The main takeaway: Overall, if you need baby projects and you enjoy working from written-out patterns, you’re likely to really get your money’s worth from this book.

This book includes a helpful stitch guide with actual, step-by-step photographs of all the basic crochet stitches plus some not-so-basic stitches and techniques including color changes and front post double crochets. This is likely to be really helpful to you if you haven’t crocheted in awhile – or ever.

In the back of the book, you’ll find a visual index showing you small thumbnail-sized photos of all the projects. I LOVE this feature! It is such a time-saver, because you can see all the projects and choose one easily, rather than having to spend a lot of time flipping through the book trying to decide on a project.

This book has broad appeal. The projects are easy enough to be accessible to new crocheters, yet they are appealing enough that even ultra-experienced crocheters are likely to find projects they’ll want to make.

Many of the projects included in this book are gift-worthy ones.

This book, itself, would be suitable for giving as a gift to an expectant parent or grandparent who enjoys crocheting.

Other Observations About This Book

The photography is done well, with human models modeling the wearable projects. This is SO helpful, because it gives you an idea of how the projects will look on a real person. But, in order to also show you the details you need to see, the wearable projects are also shown without a person in the shot — usually laid flat; sometimes with additional close-ups and sometimes not.

Almost all the photographs are clear, bright and styled well. A small number of them have slightly blurred areas or distracting shadows; however, in all cases, there are additional pics of the projects you’ll be able to look at.

Things to Be Aware of Before You Buy This Book

This book does not include international symbol crochet charts.

It also doesn’t include any garment schematics. It’s a real bummer that these weren’t included, because they’d have made it easier to grade the patterns into larger sizes for older toddlers or kids if you were so inclined. But, no. If you’re in need of patterns for kids older than about 12 months, this book isn’t the right choice for that. In that case, check out Crochet for Girls (if you’re crocheting for girls) or Baby Blueprint Crochet (which includes patterns for both boys and girls. Conclusion

I’m delighted to recommend this book to other crochet enthusiasts. I think it is an excellent value for its asking price.

Where to Buy This Book:

  • Click here to shop for this book at Knitpicks. Even if you normally shop for books elsewhere, Knitpicks is definitely worth checking out, because they are OFTEN the online retailers offering the best discount on knitting and crochet books. I cannot promise they’ll always have a particular book discounted; but if there is ever a knitting or crochet book you’re interested in buying, it is worth a quick click to check their price. Another bonus is that you can buy some or all of your yarn at the same time. For example, the suggested yarn for the baby sock pattern in this book is Hawthorne Speckle, which is a super affordable Knitpicks yarn. In general, Knitpicks offers really great values on yarns, and I’ve been totally satisfied with all the yarns and tools I bought from them.
